ABOUT APOSTLE 22
My name is Frank Roffers; I hail from nearby Ashland, Wisconsin, and I have a great love for Bayfield and The Apostle Islands. My family has owned a summer cabin on Madeline Island for many years.
After a sales and magazine publishing career, I stumbled upon Bayfield Wine & Spirits in 2023 and decided to uncork a new adventure.
For years, I believed Northern Wisconsin was underserved for a store that offers Fine Wine, Spirits, and a Cheese Market with high-quality gourmet offerings and outstanding service. I have decided to be a merchant with the mission to fill this void.
So, what's our deal? Apostle 22 isn't just any ordinary wine and spirits shop - we're your friendly neighborhood store that's all about creating unexpected experiences without pretension. We go the extra mile to curate a range of products that's not just about what's popular, but what's truly exceptional. Most importantly, we're all about finding deals and providing value for our customers.
Bayfield & The Apostle Islands
Gateway to the Apostles - ca 1925
Bayfield is known as the "Gateway to the Apostle Islands." The Apostle Islands is located in Lake Superior and has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Native Americans were the first inhabitants of these islands, leaving traces of their lives through artifacts and cultural sites.

Over time, the 22 islands have been shaped by nature and human activities, with resources like forests and fisheries playing a significant role in settlement patterns. The islands were renamed the Apostle Islands in the 1660s by Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, a French Jesuit priest.
Geographically made up of a cluster of gem-like, wooded islands, 21 are part of the United States National Lakeshore. Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostles, is not. All of the islands feature raw natural beauty and rich cultural history. Trimmed with sea caves, sandstone cliffs, and miles of pristine sand beaches, each island has its own character and back story.

Bayfield is rich in history, from the geological formation of Lake Superior to the first Native American settlements and the arrival of French missionaries and fur traders. The town's heritage is preserved through various historic sites and museums that offer visitors a glimpse into its past. The city of Bayfield was named in honor of Lieutenant Henry R. T. Bayfield, a British naval officer who conducted the first survey of Lake Superior in 1823.

Bayfield radiates the quaint charm of a tranquil and pristine community akin to "Mayberry," where friendly residents create a safe and welcoming atmosphere. Its picturesque setting evokes a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting, capturing the essence of simpler times and upholding cherished small-town values and traditions. Unlike many modern tourist destinations, Bayfield has retained its unspoiled character.
